Final: Pinecrest 26 - Hoggard 17

Pinecrest upset No. 2 seed Hoggard 26-17 Friday to the advance to the 4AA East Region football final next week.

The Patriots bend but don't break defense was stellar, limiting the Vikings' heralded passing game to 107 yards on the night. Led by Shymeik Reaves, Rodney Evans, Levi Bear and Jacob Depouli, Pinecrest held Hoggard to 185 total yards of total offense and pitched a second-half shutout.

Offensively, Pinecrest's Zathan Hill was the man. He had a game-high 152 rushing yards and touchdown runs of 6, 2 and 50 yards — the last one securing the win with 2:04 to play. The senior is 101 yards shy of breaking the 2,000 yard mark for the season.

Sophomore quarterback Ben Garbark picked apart a touted Hoggard secondary completing 11 of 17 passes for 194 yards. He tossed a 27-yard touchdown to Reaves, who earned player of the game, with excellence as a receiver, defensive back and his special teams work.

Hoggard (10-2) capitalized on Pinecrest errors turning a fumbled punt into a field goal and a special teams break down into an 85-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. The Vikings also blocked two extra points.

Starting Hogard quarterback Gabriel Johnson left the game in the first quarter and backup Chris Toudle found Drew Medley for a 25-yard touchdown just before the half for the final Hoggard score.

The No. 6-seed Patriots (11-3) travel to No. 1 Wake Forest, the winner of 43 straight games. The Cougars (12-0) are the two-time defending state 4AA champions. They beat Leesville Road 41-10 Friday to advance to their eighth East Region final since 2008. #goPinecrest #MSRscores
