West Brunswick scored three times in the first quarter and took advantage of five Union Pines turnovers to post a 31-20 win in the first round of the state 3AA football playoffs Friday in Shallotte. Viking running back Tyreek McCoy had a one-yard rushing touchdown in the second frame and quarterback Rory Board completed a 79-yard catch and run to Archie Chandler to cut the Trojan lead to 21-14 at the half. Board connected with Chandler for a second half score, but the No. 10-seed Vikings could not overcome the turnovers. The No. 7 seed Trojans are 10-1 and face No. 2 New Hanover next week. Union Pines finishs the season 8-4.
North Moore posted a 21-12 homecoming win over South Davidson Friday in Robbins. The Mustangs improve to 2-5 overall, 1-3 in league play. Spring Creek (1-8) visits North Moore next week.
Union Pines lost to Lee County 46-6 Friday in Sanford. The undefeated Yellow Jackets (7-0) are tied for the top spot in the TriCounty Conference with Southern Lee. The Cavaliers (5-2) visit Cameron next week to visit the Vikings (5-3)
